School Assesses Procedures After Attempted Kidnapping

Changes are under way at one San Mateo school after a 9-year-old girl was taken by a stranger. Fortunately, the little girl escaped by kicking the man and running back to the school. Police have made an arrest.

School Officials Confirm Shooting at Atlanta Middle School

Atlanta school officials have confirmed that a shooting took place at Price Middle School Thursday in Georgia. School officials say two people were wounded in the shooting. One 14-year-old victim was rushed to the hospital after being shot in the head, the Associated Press reports. Police say they have two people in custody.

Los Angeles-Area School District Brings in High-Powered Assault Weapons

Fontana Unified School District police purchased 14 of the Colt LE6940 rifles last fall, and they were delivered the first week of December — a week before the Connecticut school shooting. The semiautomatic rifles look like they belong in a war zone instead of a suburban public school, but officials in this Los Angeles-area city say the high-powered weapons now in the hands of school police could prevent a massacre.

Tazewell (Va.) Sheriff Appointed to Task Force on School, Campus Safety

A southwestern Virginia lawman, with an extensive background as a school resource officer, in community policing, rural law enforcement and administration has been selected by Gov. Bob McDonnell to serve on the newly-created Task Force on School and Campus Safety.

Virginia Voters Want Armed Guards at Every School

Bucking the national trend, Virginia voters, by a wide margin, want an armed guard in every school, but they do strongly back an assault weapons ban, according to a poll Thursday. A Quinnipiac University poll found that Old Dominion voters favor putting an armed police officer at every school, 66 percent to 29 percent.

Student Shot at Calif. High School; Suspect Held

A student was shot and wounded at a rural California high school Thursday and a student suspect was taken into custody, officials said. The shooting occurred about 9 a.m. at Taft Union High School, a community of fewer than 10,000 people amid oil and natural gas production fields about 120 miles northwest of Los Angeles. A shotgun was used in the attack, officials said.
