Bullying Laws Hit Roadblocks in Nine States


Auto mechanics perform alignments by lining up the direction of the wheels so the vehicle is pointed in a straight line. Curriculum alignment follows the same principle, with the "wheels" being curriculum, instruction, standards and assessment. Research indicates this kind of alignment can point a school or district toward improved student achievement.

Over the course of one school year, Teresa Moran has gone from a concerned yet helpless parent to an active participant in her children's education.

Last school year, Moran was struggling to communicate with her second-grade son, Robert, about how he was doing in his Los Angeles school. Moran, who immigrated to the area from Mexico 12 years ago, spoke very little English and could not help her son with his homework or discuss any educational concerns with his teacher.


Turn the Paige?

It's becoming the comment that won't go away. A petition and advertising campaign directed at Secretary of Education Rod Paige says he has flunked his job and should be fired for calling the nation's largest teacher's union a "terrorist organization."


I will forgive Anthony Amato if the next time we call to interview him, he declines. Because of the brouhaha he's currently embroiled in as he fights to save his job as New Orleans school superintendent, I'm sure Amato hasn't realized an amazing coincidence.
