Joe Belmonte stays local in Washington for top position

The Tenino School District has picked a new chief educator. Joe Belmonte, the current assistant superintendent specializing in elementary education at the Lacey-based North Thurston School District, will start July 1 as the district's superintendent. Belmonte will replace Russ Pickett, who resigned to become the superintendent of an Oregon district.

Craig Ross, who has served as Robertsdale High School principal since 2011, has been selected by the Cullman County School System as its first appointed superintendent. Ross will replace retiring superintendent Billy Coleman.

Glenn "Max" McGee has been offered the Palo Alto district's superintendent position. He is currently head of school at the Princeton Institute for Mathematics and Science, an educational start-up that he spearheaded in the last year with the backing of a Chinese foundation.

The Virginia city's school board has hired David S. Gaston as its new superintendent of schools beginning July 1. He has spent the last 10 years as the head of the Department of Accountability, Quality, and Innovation in the Williamsburg-James City County school systems.

Iowa man is new Accomack superintendent

Kregg A. Cuellar, the chief schools officer of Des Moines Public Schools, has been named the next superintendent of Virginia's Accomack County Public Schools. He replaces Bruce Benson, who left the county this spring after 33 months in the job to become superintendent in Stafford County.

West Allegheny appoints Jerri Lynn Lippert as school superintendent

The Pennsylvania district has appointed Jerri Lynn Lippert, chief academic officer of Pittsburgh Public Schools, as superintendent starting July 1. A replacement for retiring superintendent John DiSanti, she will become the first woman to head West Allegheny.

Illinois' District 140 School Board accepted the resignation of Superintendent Bob Gold and appointed middle school principal Bob Bardwell to the position. Gold, who has served Congerville-Eureka-Goodfield schools for 20 years, will begin in July as associate superintendent of highly effective schools for the Arizona Department of Education.

Turnover spikes in Virginia schools’ top jobs

As of July, more than half of Virginia’s 133 public school superintendent jobs will have turned over since the start of 2012, according to an analysis by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Longtime education officials say it’s an unusually high turnover, anecdotally attributed to a variety of factors, including a wave of retiring baby boomers.
