Carroll schools superintendent requests increased county funding

Carroll County Public Schools Superintendent Steve Guthrie has proposed an operating budget for the Maryland district calling for a 2 percent increase, $4.8 million, in county funding for fiscal year 2015. Guthrie presented his budget proposal, which he says is designed to keep the school system "afloat and address the needs we have," to the Board of Education earlier this week.

Sen. Anderson endorses Hofmeister for Oklahoma school superintendent

Enid state Sen. Patrick Anderson is one of 20 Republican lawmakers to endorse Joy Hofmeister for state school superintendent. Hofmeister, who has not yet announced her candidacy, said the GOP lawmakers will form a steering committee to advise her as she prepares to launch a statewide campaign.

Louisiana superintendent gets high marks from school board

The Lafourche School Board has rated Superintendent JoAnn Matthews as excellent in her semi-annual evaluation. According to board policy, members are required to review the superintendent’s performance in the fall and spring. Each board member completes an observation report with scores ranging from 1 to 5, and then the review committee averages and totals the scores.

Embattled San Juan Unified superintendent resigns

San Juan Unified School District Superintendent Glynn Thompson will step down in January following an investigation that substantiated claims from some employees of bullying and retaliation, the district announced Thursday. Trustees accepted his resignation – officially announced as a retirement – rather than try to fire Thompson for actions that have prompted $17 million in tort claims.

North Carolina district hires new superintendent from Scotland County

Rick Stout, current superintendent of Scotland County Schools, will take the reins at Onslow County Schools in early 2014. His selection was announced during the Onslow County Board of Education meeting Thursday night. Stout said he hopes to continue the path of excellence already established at Onslow County Schools. He said he would like Onslow County Schools to be the best in state.

Ted Mitchell, Education Dept. nominee, has strong ties to Pearson, privatization movement

Ted Mitchell, the chief executive of the NewSchools Venture Fund, was nominated in October by President Obama to become the Under Secretary of the Department of Education. As the administration continues to reshuffle its team, and confront new regulatory challenges, some view Mitchell’s nomination as a move towards greater privatization. In the coming months, the Department of Education will release “gainful employment” rules to rein in for-profit colleges, an experiment in proprietary education that many see as an unmitigated disaster.
