The House Government Committee on Thursday removed Wake County from legislation that shifted responsibility for construction and upkeep of public schools from local school boards to boards of county commissioners.

The charter school initiative called for school districts to apply to become “authorizers.” If approved, the authorizers would issue requests for proposals to establish specific charter schools or programs. In addition to approved districts, a charter school commission appointed by the state Board of Education acts as an authorizer.

UCLA’s Higher Education Research Institute has found that only 1% of students are majoring in computer science, and 0.3% of those are women, despite computer science skills being in high demand. Patton believes that robotics can help address that asymmetry by making computing more interesting for girls.
