Adrian Vega implements school leadership prep academies
Adrian Vega, superintendent of San Benito Consolidated ISD in Texas, has implemented leadership prep academies that promote professional development among aspiring leaders in the district.
Vega meets with administrators and teachers to ensure training focal points are maintained, has implemented a reading club that discusses business development books from the school’s perspective, and has created a teacher mentorship and collaboration program.
Anita Berger, principal of Benjamin Banneker Academic High School at the District of Columbia Public School District, saw a lot of recent success.
Under Berger’s leadership, the school’s math and reading test scores rose by more than 20 percent, the graduation rate reached 100 percent, and the number of students who passed Advanced Placement exams rose by 35 percent.
Former President Obama, who visited the school twice during his tenure, congratulated the district for being an early and enthusiastic adopter of the Common Core standards and teacher evaluations tied to student test scores.
Betsy DeVos is the new Secretary of Education. DeVos, a philanthropist from Michigan, has devoted her life to expanding educational choice through charter schools. She has also focused on increasing vouchers so students can use taxpayer dollars to pay tuition at private, religious and for-profit educational institutions.
Richard Rosenberger, superintendent of Anderson School District in South Carolina, created One District, One Book, a districtwide reading program for the 2016-17 school year.
Elementary students in the family literacy initiative read a book with their family every day, while middle school and high school students participate in other literacy activities.
Meghan Dunn, the principal of Public School 446 in Brownsville, New York, hired social workers from the citywide nonprofit Partnership With Children to help latchkey students.
Social workers meet with about 100 of the 370 students every week, help them with homework and run a monthly parents group and a fathers support group. Since the initiative, more students read at grade level, from last year’s 32 percent to 41 percent this year. Disciplinary issues have declined by 33 percent.
