Under Fire

Robert Bobb, emergency financial manager for Detroit Public Schools, is being sued by the DPS school board for interfering with academic decisions. Bobb has filed an appeal against an injunction banning him from these actions.



The 2010-2011 presidentelect of the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) is Patricia E. Neudecker, superintendent of Oconomowoc (Wis.) Area Schools. Neudecker brings with her 25 years of education experience.


Top Teacher

On April 29, President Obama presented Sarah Brown Wessling, English teacher at Johnston (Iowa) High School, with the 2010 National Teacher of the Year award at a ceremony held in the White House Rose Garden.


New Community Leader

Santiago Taveras has been named the new chief of community engagement for the New York City Department of Education (DOE). The DOE created the position in an effort to improve parent relations and community involvement.



Beloved Shaw Middle School Principal Brian Betts was found slain in his Silver Spring, Md., home on April 15. Over 2,000 friends, family members and students attended the wake of the innovative leader of the D.C. Public Schools.
