People Watch: Lynn Moody to lead Rowan-Salisbury School System

New Superintendent

Lynn Moody will become superintendent of the Rowan-Salisbury School System in North Carolina in October. She is former superintendent of Rock Hill Schools in South Carolina, where she launched a $9 million initiative to provide an iPad to every student in grades 4 through 8.

State-run district leader

Paymon Rouhanifard, former chief strategy and innovation officer for Newark Public Schools, was selected as superintendent of Camden Public Schools. This is the first year the low-performing district will be under the full control of the state of New Jersey.

Principal of the year

Sheena Alaiasa, of King Intermediate School in Hawaii Public Schools, is the first principal from the state to win the Middle Level Principal of the Year award from the National Association of Secondary School Principals and MetLife. She helped increase student achievement, and oversaw a 95 percent drop in student disciplinary incidents in five years.

Health award

Gene R. Carter, CEO and executive director of ASCD, received the Best Health Promotion Practice Award from the International Union for Health Promotion and Education for his service encouraging a whole child approach to education and making connections with the healthcare field.

Assistant principal honored

Kimberly Stockton, assistant principal for facilities at Cocoa High School in Brevard Public Schools in Florida, received the district’s Outstanding Assistant Principal Award. She lead the school’s transition into a junior/senior high school this year, after a middle school closed.
