Takeaways from the 2018 ‘What’s Hot in Literacy’ report

More than 2,000 educators from 91 countries and territories responded to the most recent survey from the International Literacy Association, targeting the most important issues in literacy. Findings from the report include:

87% rank early literacy as the most important topic

56% label it as “extremely important”

86% consider equity in literacy an important topic, including issues such as:

  • access to books and content
  • diversity
  • mother tongue literacy

Hottest topics now:

  • Teacher prep
  • Professional development

Both lag far behind in terms of importance of being addressed by educators

Two thirds of respondents who say digital literacy is important—21st-century literacy skills, they say, need more attention, including:

  • critical literacy (focusing on critical thinking)
  • disciplinary literacy (where literacy figures into understanding other classroom subjects)
