California and West Virginia Join 13 States Nationwide in Approving Discovery Education Techbooks for Classroom Use Statewide

-California’s Adoption of the Social Studies Techbook and West Virginia’s Adoption of the Math Techbook Continue Trend of Nationwide Approval of Award-Winning Digital Textbooks for Classroom Use-

Silver Spring, Md. (November 28, 2017) – California and West Virginia have become the latest states to adopt Discovery Education’s award-winning digital textbook series for classroom use.  Following a thorough review process, the California Board of Education, as recommended by the California Instructional Quality Commission, authorized the adoption of the Discovery Education Social Studies Techbook™, while West Virginia’s Board of Education approved the Discovery Education Math Techbook™ for statewide use on the recommendation of the state’s Instructional Materials Review Committee.

Earlier this month, Florida’s Commissioner of Education approved the adoption of the Discovery Education Social Studies Techbook™ and Tennessee’s Board of Education approved the Discovery Education Science Techbook™ for statewide.  To date, 15 states across the country have approved Discovery Education’s Techbook for statewide use.

California’s Board of Education approved the Social Studies Techbook’s United States History, Medieval and Early Modern World History, and Ancient World History courses while West Virginia’s Board of Education adopted all middle and high school Discovery Education Math Techbook courses, including the Grades 6, 7, and 8 Math, Math I, II and III, Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II courses. Through their action, California and West Virginia’s Boards of Education have empowered their states’ school systems to purchase and integrate these Techbooks into teaching and learning.

Discovery Education’s Techbooks are breakthrough digital textbooks that support a comprehensive curriculum, are aligned to rigorous standards, and are updated regularly at no cost. The Techbook series encourages all learners through interactive features that change the reading level of text and enable text to be read aloud. In addition, the Techbook series saves teachers’ time with a comprehensive design that places model lessons, student activities and assessments at their fingertips.

The Social Studies Techbook series adopted in California uses an inquiry-based instructional approach that emphasizes informational text literacy, analytical writing, and problem-solving skills that students will apply in the classroom and beyond. Each subject area includes primary source documents and activities, digital investigations, multimedia reference library, interactive maps, and more.

The Math Techbook series adopted in West Virginia connects students to math through real-world problems worth solving, combines conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application to help all students develop a long-lasting mastery of mathematics.  Earlier this year, Math Techbook was independently verified by EdReports.org to meet the highest levels of mathematical content and pedagogy.

“Discovery Education thanks the California and West Virginia Boards of Education for their careful review and ultimate approval of the Discovery Education Techbooks,” said Coni Rechner, Discovery Education Senior Vice President of National Partnerships.  “Their rigorous review of these resources ensures educators in both states will have the opportunity to integrate the highest quality social studies and math content available into classroom instruction and create the dynamic digital classrooms that will engage students and improve student outcomes.”
