Capstone Leadership Receives Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – June 16, 2014 – Capstone, a leading publisher of children’s books and digital products and services, announces its Principal Robert Coughlan and CEO Tom Ahern are recipients of the 2014 Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for the upper Midwest. Capstone’s leadership was recognized as one of 10 companies to receive the prestigious business award which honors entrepreneurs who have shown remarkable success in innovation, financial performance, risk, and personal commitment to their businesses and communities.
“We are incredibly honored to receive this recognition and accept it on behalf of our 350 colleagues at Capstone who bring their creativity and passion every day and are the foundation of our company. At Capstone our motto is, ‘create awesome learning experiences.’ We share a common mission of realizing the power of literacy education and its impact on children’s lives,” said Ahern.
Coughlan added, “Tom and I would also like to recognize our customers with whom we have a wonderful love affair. They push us to be better and we respond. It’s not always easy, but it’s always right.”
Capstone began publishing books in 1991 with a list of 48 titles and has grown to an expansive publishing house with more than 13,000 titles. With a focus on long term growth and innovation, Capstone utilized emerging technologies to transform a print only publishing business into one offering platform solutions, hybrid models, and apps that support the educational experience. Over the last few years, Capstone’s market presence expanded from a library only business to one that reaches the classroom, the district, internationally, and the home.
Strategic investments in technology led to the development of: myON™ reader, a personalized learning environment with over 4 million kids in 5,000 school reading with it; PebbleGo™, a PreK-5 literacy and research solution; and Capstone Interactive, a collection of more than 3,000 interactive e-books.
Advancing childhood literacy is an issue of significant importance at Capstone. A major focus in Capstone’s corporate giving program is investing in literacy education for children and future leaders. Capstone strives to be a community leader by supporting literacy programs, expanding educational opportunities, and caring for the environment.
In 2012, Capstone launched the Capstone Literacy Center in Mankato, Minn., to help struggling readers in grades 1-12. Starting with one location, the program has grown to include four additional satellite sites. Capstone’s Employee Volunteer Time program encourages and empowers employees to give back to their communities with volunteer time which is paid for by the company.
Capstone was one of three Minnesota companies to win the 2012 Minnesota Keystone Award for the impact of their corporate giving program. Capstone has also been a sponsor of the United Way for more than 15 years and donates more than 60,000 books each year to local and national programs.
The 2014 Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for the Midwest recipients will attend a national gala in the fall where one overall winner will compete for the World Entrepreneur of the Year title.
