Second Step Program and Panorama Education Partner to Offer Research-Based Curriculum and Assessments for Students’ Social-Emotional Learning

Committee for Children, creator of the Second Step Program, partners with Panorama Education for measurement and analytics to support the whole student

(Boston, MA) September 21, 2017 — The Second Step Program (http://www.secondstep.org/), developed by Committee for Children, and Panorama Education (https://www.panoramaed.com/) today announced a new partnership to help schools and districts nationwide understand and develop students’ social-emotional skills. The research teams behind the two programs have mapped Panorama’s research-backed measures of social-emotional learning (SEL) to the Second Step Program to create a coordinated SEL assessment. Now schools and districts that use Panorama can administer social-emotional learning assessments and reports that align with the social, emotional, and relational skills fostered by the award-winning Second Step Program. And district and school administrators, teachers, and counselors can use social-emotional learning data and analytics from Panorama Education to guide instruction, interventions, and individual student supports.

“We have used the Second Step Program for several years in our district,” said Becky Ballbach, director of student support services at Everett Public Schools, WA. “As a result of our focus on social-emotional learning and supporting the whole child, we have reinforced our perspective and language from supporting ‘all students’ to supporting ‘each student.’ In order to understand the holistic needs and growth of each student, we are using Panorama Education to help us see where we are now on key social-emotional and relationship skill-development and to pinpoint what we need to do to support students in our schools.”

This fall, school districts using the Second Step Program are leveraging Panorama Education to establish baseline measurement of students’ social, emotional, and relationship skills and to evaluate Second Step implementation fidelity across school sites to inform student supports and programmatic priorities. The partnership between the two programs directly supports district administrators, principals, counselors, and teachers who are focused on growing students’ social, emotional, and relationship skills.

The alignment of the Second Step Program and Panorama Education is born of close collaboration between the research and program teams from both organizations. Panorama’s measurements of more than 22 social-emotional learning domains are used in leading districts, including Fresno Unified School District (CA), Long Beach Unified School District (CA), and Washoe County School District (NV), and have shown have shown a high degree of validity and reliability (http://bit.ly/2hhRNK0), including correlations with students’ academic, attendance, and behavioral data.

The Second Step Program is the most widely-used social-emotional learning curriculum in the United States, and is currently taught across Los Angeles Unified School District (CA), Austin Independent School District (TX), and Atlanta Public Schools (GA). The program is developed from decades of research, and a number of studies have shown that it leads to positive outcomes for preschool, elementary, and middle school students.

Now school districts using the Second Step Program for Pre-K through Grade 8 can use Panorama to seamlessly evaluate Second Step implementation across classrooms and campuses. In addition, teachers, counselors, and principals can access instructional resources developed by the Second Step Program on Playbook, Panorama’s professional learning community for teachers.
