Portland Public Schools has 10 campuses that rank in the top 10 percent of Oregon schools and three in the bottom 5 percent, according to data released Thursday by the Oregon Department of Education.

Three Gladstone schools showed little improvement in their 2013 state report cards, released by the Oregon Department of Education Thursday. The state uses a Level 1-5 rating system to identify the best and worst schools in the state, with 5 being the highest. Three schools earned Level 3 ratings this year, mirroring last year's report card. That rating reflects below-average performance compared with schools statewide.

Football is the most popular sport among high school boys, with more than 1 million playing the game. But the sport has taken a hit in recent years over allegations that the game is unsafe. Young athletes across all sports suffer 300,000 concussions each year, according to researchers from Nationwide Children's Hospital.

Thousands of parents, students, and educators took to the streets of New York City Tuesday morning demanding better schools and a better deal for charter schools. Their main target of concern: front-running mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio, who has said he would charge rent to some charter school operators that now get free space in public school buildings.
