Cedarbrook Middle School will delay its first day of school, scheduled for Sept. 3, due to a mold problem, according to Cheltenham School District. Superintendent Natalie Thomas described Cedarbrook’s mold issue to be a “fairly significant” problem and added that the district did not anticipate the school to open Sept. 4 either.

Keith Evans, head of Henrico County's Collegiate School, has accepted a similar position in Atlanta, but he’ll stay in Richmond for the 2013-2014 school year. His departure is the second of the school's leadership team this year.

Parents enrolling their teens in middle and high school in the Flowing Wells Unified School District in Tucson are being asked to sign a pledge promising to lock up their guns and teach their children about the "dangers and consequences" of the misuse of firearms as part of the district's registration process.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said the city will seek to borrow $50 million to avoid a delayed start to the public-school year for 136,000 students. A cash infusion would enable schools Superintendent William Hite Jr. to rehire 1,000 counselors, assistant principals, aides, and others who were among 4,100 employees laid off earlier this year.
