Seven cities to share $1 million to start STEM mentoring programs

Discovery Communications and US2020 are partnering to bolster US2020’s goal of matching 1 million STEM mentors with students by 2020. Sponsored by Cisco, the US2020 City Competition's winning city coalitions, representing over 200 companies and organizations, developed innovative models to increase the number of mentors. The winners will share $1 million in financial, consulting and staff support.

New digital platform and mathematics program released

Marshall Cavendish Education, together with Singapore Math Inc., released a new edition of the Primary Mathematics program, which is specifically aligned with the national Common Core. Also available for the 2014-2015 school year is a new digital platform, Primary Digital.

New guide released on 3D printing in the classroom

Constructing Modern Knowledge Press announced the publication of The Invent To Learn Guide to 3D Printing in the Classroom: Recipes for Success. The book covers a variety of step-by-step classroom projects, 3D printing technology, new design software and advice on purchasing a 3D printer.

InFocus adds new ultra-portable LED projector

InFocus Corporation has added the paperback book-sized IN1142 to its LightPro family of ultra-portable LED projectors. The LightPro IN1142 delivers a high-contrast, WXGA widescreen image at a brightness of 700 lumens.

New customizable high school math digital textbook released

Teacher Laura Glading-Smith has introduced a new digital math textbook that is customizable to high school math students. The digital textbook allows students to access a number of different methods for understanding important mathematical concepts.

North Carolina district signs on-call deal with Timmons Group

Timmons Group’s Raleigh Survey Group signed an on-call survey engineering contract with Wake County Public Schools System. As the second largest school system in North Carolina, Wake County hired Timmons Group’s Professional Land Surveyors to provide multiple surveying services.

Esri pledges $1 billion in STEM software to ConnectED Initiative

Esri, a geographic information system software developer, is teaming up with Amazon Web Services and the ConnectED government education program to provide a grant to make its advanced mapping software available for free to the more than 100,000 K12 schools. The contribution value exceeds $1 billion.

TESOL releases new Common Core resources for teachers of English learners

TESOL International Association, a professional association committed to promoting excellence in English-language teaching, has released resources to help teachers of English learners address the Common Core State Standards. The resources include books, papers and a webinar.

Ashley Judd to be new ISTE opening keynote

The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) announced that actor and global humanitarian, Ashley Judd, will give the opening keynote at ISTE 2014. Actor America Ferrera, previously scheduled to speak, is unable to attend due to a scheduling conflict. Part idea incubator and part collaborative workspace, the ISTE annual conference, to be held June 28 – July 1 in Atlanta.

MIND Research Institute names co-founder Matthew Peterson as CEO

MIND Research Institute’s board of directors named Matthew Peterson, Ph.D., its new CEO. Ted Smith is retiring as CEO and chairman. He will remain chairman until a new one is elected, and then continue as a member of the board. Peterson co-founded the nonprofit in 1998, along with Gordon Shaw, Ph.D., and Mark Bodner, Ph.D.
