The state's Educational Equity in Schools rule defines “equity” as recognizing that all students can learn and that schools will provide the resources they need for equal educational opportunities. That includes funding, programs, policies, and other supports to afford students the same access to education, no matter their backgrounds.
The proposed amendments, which passed 11-1 in the Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Interim Committee on Nov. 15, were inspired by state lawmakers’ previous visits to school shooting sites—including Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where 14 students and three staff members were fatally shot on Valentine’s Day 2018.
The state of Utah, like other states, has filed its own complaints; Gov. Spencer Cox announced last month that Utah was suing against Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.
The Salt Lake Tribune compiled a list of 262 books removed across 17 school districts. One literature professor asks: “What are we going to be left with?”
This year specifically, almost 500 fewer students enrolled compared to last year, marking a 2.5% decrease. The trend has been ailing the school district over the last decade.
